Google could face changes in its online research services in the United Kingdom after regulators have raised concerns about the domination of the technology giant.
The Competition and Markets Authority declared on Tuesday that it consulted a proposal to give Google “the status of the strategic market”, a designation under new competition rules for technological companies which have a power rooted on a certain market.
Watchdog has obtained an extent of competition and mergers’ control powers this year while the law on digital markets, competition and consumers have entered into force.
Similar to a European Union law known as the law on digital marketsThe legislation gives the CMA the possibility of applying consumer protections directly to technology giants and taking measures – including fines of up to 10% of world annual income for violations.
The CMA has established a measuring roadmap for Google if its designation of strategic market status is successful, in particular:
In response to the CMA decision, Google said on Tuesday that the outcome of these changes “could have important implications for businesses and consumers” in the United Kingdom
“The CMA has reiterated today that the” strategic market status “does not imply that anti -competitive behavior has taken place – but this announcement presents clear challenges to the critical areas of our business in the United Kingdom,” said Oliver Bethell, main director of Google for competition, in a press release.
“We fear that the scope of AMC considerations remains broad and vague, with a series of interventions envisaged before all proof has been provided.”
Bethell added that Google plans to “continue to work constructively with the AMC” to prevent such measures being imposed.
This occurs while regulators from around the world were looking for more and more to slow down major players in technology on their significant market power.
In April, an American judge judged that Google holds illegal monopolies In two markets for online advertising technology, opening the way to antitrust prosecutors to request a break in its advertising products.
Meanwhile, an advisor to the short court of the European Union last week recommended to reject Google’s call against an antittruter fine of 4.1 billion billion euros ($ 4.8 billion).
