Transgender and non -compliance with sex People continue to fight for equal rights, despite persistent attacks Conservative legislators in the United States and abroad. While many members of the LGBTQ + community might not feel safe at all, given the recent events, trans -color women Stay the most vulnerable to discrimination and violence. To help you better understand how to support members of your community, Wired was spent with three defense groups that work to protect and empower Trans.
Recognize the humanity of others
If you are a Cisgenre person (no, it’s not an insult), where to start? It’s quite simple. “The most human thing to do is to recognize our humanity. Some people are really belief that we do not deserve a place in the world, ”explains Tiommi Lucket, a principal national organizer for trans to the Transgender Law Center. “I think they must see our humanity and recognize that we are not asking for special rights.”
Do not assume that you understand the nuances of the lived experience of a trans person based on preconceived ideas or someone else’s opinion. If it is important to recognize the difficulties and discrimination encountered by trans people (or people of any marginalized group), dynamism and nuances of their lives are not often represented in the media. “We must see the trans joy more visibly present in the world,” explains Camila Camaleón, administrative coordinator at Gender justice.
Invite yourself with local organizations
National organizations can be a force for good, but you probably feel more connected to those around you and that you can potentially have a greater impact by involving a local defense group. You do not know where to locate the group of trans rights near you? If you are in the United States, Consult this list Of our sister publication Them To find a group that could be closer to you. Registrations are included in the 50 states. Located in the United Kingdom? Trans is a website you can use to find groups near you.
“Gender justice was essential to build this community healing space for our members and to honor our transcesses,” explains Sonia Guiñansaca, program director for popular organization. This is an example of a plea group led by bipocoche which are trans, not in accordance with gender, and two minds. They are fighting to improve the lives of people who are marginalized, build a new generation of leaders and provide physical location so that people are cured, create art and envisage a better future.
Go back and listen to the trans people in color
“Center ourselves is not selfish,” explains Ezak Perez, executive director of Gender Justice la. “We should focus on ourselves and ourselves so that we can get out and really fight for the problems that have an impact on our communities.” White Cie must understand that the work of an ally is not to take care of the situation. Instead, listen to the leadership of marginalized people and follow. “We don’t necessarily need people to direct,” they say. “But we need people to get on board and fight by our side.”
If you haven’t done it, register to vote
“It’s so critical that people take the time to register to vote, then vote,” explains Sasha Buchet, director of the non -binary and transgender rights project Lambda Legal. She mentioned the coherent vote as one of the most important actions that an ally can take, in particular for young people who support equal rights but who may not present themselves to the polls on the day of the ballot.
Contact your representatives
Beyond the vote, Buchet recommends calling the leaders of your local government and asking them what they have done recently to protect the lives of Trans voters. “I guarantee you that there are other people opposed to trans people who know the system,” she said. “They know the power to speak to their state legislators.” Visit This website To find contact details for your local elected representative in the United States, and go here If you are in the United Kingdom.
Denounce harassment
“Do not stay on foot and let the subtle transphobia occur,” explains Buchet. She emphasizes that less manifest examples of transphobia, such as a sordid comment made by a friend, actively contribute to the hostile environment experienced by trans and non -compliant gender.
“It is not a joke for us to be attacked in the street just to be who we are,” explains Luckett. It can be frightening and dangerous to intervene if you see harassment occurring in public, but you have several options as a spectator, such as creating a distraction or using your phone for documentation. This NPR webcomic is an excellent resource for passers -by who want to better understand how to react, in the moment, harassment.
Support the cause all year round
Whoever is financially able to consider making donations to trans-central support groups, as Tulip house in Louisiana or Lucie Place in Arkansas – All year round, not just for Month of pride. “If we had a situation of a month of pride every month, we would really be able to expand and develop our programs at a huge rate,” explains Perez. Donations to small local groups May have an oversized impact on their ability to provide resources to the surrounding community.
Why is it so important? “None of us are safe until we are all safe,” explains Luckett. “My release is definitely linked to your release and the release of everyone. Because when we free up black trans people, release is possible for everyone. ” Take a look at the transgender Law Center Trans Agenda for Liberation To find out more about this crucial subject.
