I always like that one of my hobbies is sleepBut I’m not really kidding. I treated insomnia Adolescent and now, as an adult, I struggle to fall asleepSo I spent most of my life trying to be a best sleeper. Fortunately, my personal interest in the quality of sleep aligns well with my work as a well-being editor.
Although technology has made health advice that is easy to access, this information can sometimes be trustworthy. It is my job to provide readers with trust advice, tested and supported by experts to make informed decisions on their health. This is why I am always alert for new accessible well-being tips, actually work and could make life easier for all those who want to improve their health.
Recently, I took the time to consider what had the greatest impact on my sleep quality In recent years. The first “sleep thing” that came to my mind was a iphone hacking I have been using for over five years. In fact, it happened to the point where I can’t sleep without that, so I’m glad it is integrated into my iPhone and is not a sleeping device I have to buy and carry around separately.
You can use the iPhone Substantive sounds Functionality to play ambient sound landscapes when you want to rest or focus. These include ocean (My favorite), rain, stream, night, fire, balanced noise, light noise and dark noise. It is essentially a white noise machine.
You can allow the background sounds to play all the time, even when other media play and adjust the volume accordingly. You can also configure feature that allows you to deactivate it easily by locking your iPhone. I have never tried this, however, because I only turn on the bottom sounds at night to sleep.
The background sounds are the icon with the three music notes at the bottom right.
To add background sounds to the control center of your iPhone for easy access, be sure to have iOS 15 or later. You can also add it to iPados 15 or later. Brow downwards of the upper corner of your screen. Press the “+” symbol at the top left, then “add a check” at the bottom. Scroll to the hearing accessibility section and click on “Background sounds”. You can also look for it in the bar at the top.
Click “Add a check” to add another feature to the control center.
Once you have added background sounds, it will be available in your control center. To access the sounds, simply keep the background sounds icon with three music notes, select your sound and adjust the volume. The ocean sound is my long-standing go-to, because I like its regular volume and its repetitive waves.
You can choose from sounds like a dark noise, a night and a rain.
After opening background sounds in your control center, you can also click on “background sound settings” at the bottom of the screen. Here you can allow the sound to play all the time or when other media play on your iPhone. You can also have it so that the background sounds go out when your phone is locked.
You can play your background sounds all the time, even when you look or listen to other media.
Although I like background sounds and I have used it every night for five years, I noticed a problem. I used to have settled it so that when my phone was in standby mode, only some people were allowed to call me in an emergency. However, this feature did not work. Even when I would have a call for scam in the middle of the night, my sound landscape stopped playing and woken up. Then, I should wait for the appellant to leave a vocal messaging or hang up before I can relieve the sound landscape, which makes sleep difficult.
I crossed a section where scam calls disturbed my sleep almost every evening. So, I defined my iPhone to silence all the calls during the sleep mode and I said to my emergency contacts to contact my partner instead – it is anyway earlier, so it works.
I use background sounds every night to drown noise outside, but it is particularly useful when I travel and I cannot control the sounds around me as much. I used the functionality in each hotel and a friend house in which I have stayed in recent years to drown noisy neighbors, strong music, barking dogs, passing cars, singing birds and even a particularly buzzing streetlamp. I imagine it would also be great on a plane, a train or a boat (a full sensory experience for ocean sounds).
The best part is that everything is fine on my phone, which means I don’t have to buy a white noise machine Or count on a hotel or host to have one. Is it essentially like having a mini white noise machine in your pocket at any time – because who knows when or where you want to transport yourself to a comfortable fire or a babbling stream to catch additional Z?
