Is Disney’s New ‘Snow White’ Remake Streaming Yet?

Disney has been making live-action remakes of its animated classics for just over 30 years, and there are even more on the way. It was inevitable that the House of Mouse would eventually get around to adapting Walt Disney’s first animated movie — and the first full-length American animated film — Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

When Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs opened in 1937, it revolutionized the animation medium and paved the way for everything Disney did later. But times have changed quite a bit in the nearly nine decades since the original film was released and the new live-action Snow White has taken a few liberties with Disney’s original version of the story. While many of the familiar elements remain in the film, this remake won’t be an exact reproduction of the first version of the movie.

Snow White actress Rachel Zegler has also called out some of the dated aspects of the original Disney film, which sparked a backlash among some fans online. It’s too soon to say whether that will affect Snow White’s box office, but some of the early reviews for the remake are very good and Zegler has been praised for her performance as the title character.

But if you’re wondering whether you can skip the theater and stay at home to watch this remake, we’re going to answer the question that brought you here.

Last weekend’s top movie, Novocainemade a measly $8 million at the box office. Snow White is expected to open with approximately $50 million, and that number could climb even higher if the audience responds to the film the way that some of the critics have.

The other reason why this film won’t be streaming anytime soon is because it was extremely expensive to make. The estimated budget was between $240 million to $269.4 millionand going straight-to-streaming would kill any chance that Disney has to recoup that investment. That’s also why there are so few original movies on Disney+ anymore. The studio isn’t willing to forgo theatrical profits if at all possible.

Although many movie studios have shortened the period between a film’s theatrical debut and its streaming premiere, Disney appears to be clawing that back. One of the studio’s most recent animated movies, Moana 2took almost three-and-a-half months before it came to Disney+. That seems to be the current timeframe for Disney’s successful films.
