Israel says he killed a senior Iranian commander who helped plan the attack on Hamas on October 7, 2023 against southern Israel during a strike on Saturday in the city of Qom.
Israeli defense forces (FDI) said that the murder of Saeed Izadi marked a key point in the conflict. He was “one of the orchestrators” of the attack, who killed around 1,200 people and saw many others in Gaza as hostages, said FDI chief Eyal Zamir.
“The blood of thousands of Israelis is with his hands,” he said on Saturday, calling him “enormous intelligence and operational realization”.
Iran has not yet confirmed the murder of Izadi and has already denied its participation in the attack on Hamas.
The FDI said that she had killed Izadi during a strike on an apartment in Qom, south of Tehran, in the early hours of Saturday. He had been in charge of the Palestine Body of the Iranian Revolutionary Body (IRGC), responsible for the management of links with the Palestinian armed groups.
He would have played a decisive role in the armaments and financing of Hamas, and had been responsible for the military coordination between senior commanders of the IRGC and the leaders of Hamas, said the FDI.
In April 2024, Izadi narrowly survived an Israeli air strike targeting the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria – an attack that killed several high -ranking QUD commanders.
Israel later on Saturday, also claimed to have killed another force commander, Behnam Shahriyari in a drone strike while he was traveling in a car through western Iran.
Shahriyari had been responsible for transporting missiles and rockets to Iranian proxies in the region, including Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, the FDI said.
If Israeli complaints are confirmed, the assassinations of Izadi and Shahryari represent a major blow to the IRGC.
The attacks are involved while the conflict between the two countries entered its ninth day, both with new attacks on Saturday.
Iran said that Israel had targeted a nuclear installation near the city of Isfahan. Israel said that it was aimed at military infrastructure in southwest Iran and reported at least an impact of Iranian drones that entered its airspace.
The Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, has awaited journalists in Istanbul that any American involvement in the conflict would be “very very dangerous”. On Friday, he told European envoys on Friday in Geneva that Iran would not resume discussions on its nuclear program until the strikes of Israel stopped.
Donald Trump suggested an involvement in Israel’s strikes on Iran, saying that Tehran had a “maximum” of two weeks to avoid possible US air strikes if they did not neglect their nuclear program.
Iranian officials say that less than 430 people, including military commanders, were killed and 3,500 injured in Iran since the start of the conflict on June 13. A human rights group according to Iran, the news agency for human rights activists, made the unofficial number of death on Friday at 657.
In Israel, officials say that 25 people have been killed, including a heart attack.
