The Palestinians in the north of Gaza reported one of the worst nights of Israeli bombing in a few weeks after the army published mass evacuation orders on Monday, while Israeli officials owed Washington for a new ceasefire by the Trump administration.
One day after US President Donald Trump urged the end of the 20-month war, a confidant by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was expected in the White House for talks on a cease-fire in Gaza, Iran and broader regional diplomatic agreements.
But on the ground in the Palestinian enclave, there was no sign of the fight against relaxation.
“The explosions have never stopped; they bombed schools and houses. It was like earthquakes,” said Salah, 60, father of five children from Gaza City. “In the news, we hear that a ceasefire is close; on the ground, we see death and we hear explosions.”
Israeli tanks have pushed into the oriental areas of the suburbs of Zeitoun in Gaza City and bombed several areas in the north, while the planes bombed at least four schools after ordering hundreds of families closing inside to leave, residents said.
On Monday, at least 25 people were killed in Israeli strikes, the health authorities announced, including 10 people killed in Zeitoun.
The Israeli army said it had struck militant objectives in northern Gaza, including command and control centers, after taking measures to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, but it has provided no evidence.
The heavy bombing followed new evacuation orders in large areas to the north, where Israeli forces had already worked and left behind a large -scale destruction. The army ordered people to go south, saying that it planned to fight activists from Hamas operating in northern Gaza, including in the heart of Gaza City.
Later Monday, health officials at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis said that at least 13 people were killed southwest of Gaza City, bringing the number of dead from Monday to at least 38.
Doctors said most of the victims were touched by gunshots, but residents also reported an air strike. There was no immediate comments from the Israeli army on this incident.
One day after Trump called on to “conclude the agreement in Gaza, to recover hostages”, the Minister of Strategic Affairs of Israel, Ron Dermer, a confidant from Netanyahu, was expected on Monday at the White House for talks on Iran and Gaza, said an Israeli official.
In Israel, the Netanyahu security firm had to meet to discuss the next stages of Gaza.
Friday, the military leader of Israel said that the current field operation was about to have achieved his objectives. And Sunday, Netanyahu said that new opportunities were open to recover the hostages, including 20 which would still be alive.
Rosalia Bollen de l’Inicef says that the way the help is distributed in Gaza is “dangerous” and “unfair” and says that she killed hundreds in Gaza. “No one should have to choose between starving or risking being killed when you try to get food,” said the agency’s communication specialist.
Palestinian and Egyptian sources knowing the last efforts of ceasefire said that the mediators of Qatar and Egypt had intensified their contacts with the two teams at war, but that no date has yet been set for a new series of truce talks.
An official in Hamas said that progress depended on the change in Israel and the acceptance of ending the war and withdrawing from Gaza. Israel says he can only end war when Hamas is disarmed and dismantled. Hamas refuses to put his arms.
The Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Saar said that Israel had accepted a cease-fire and hostage contract proposed by the United States, and put the One on Hamas.
“Israel is serious in his desire to achieve a hostage and cease-fire agreement in Gaza,” Saar told journalists in Jerusalem.
The war began when Hamas fighters stormed Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people, most civilians and bringing 251 hostages back to Gaza in a surprise attack that led to the deadliest day in Israel.
The subsequent military assault of Israel killed more than 56,000 Palestinians, most civilians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, moving almost 2.3 million inhabitants and plunging the enclave into a humanitarian crisis.
According to the United Nations, more than 80% of the territory is now an Israeli-militarized area or under travel orders.
