Israeli tanks shot a crowd trying to receive trucks in the Gaza Strip on Monday, killing at least 59 people, according to doctors, in one of the bloodiest incidents to date in growing violence while desperate residents are fighting for food.
A shared video on social networks showed a dozen mutilated bodies lying in a street in Khan Younis in the south of Gaza. The Israeli army acknowledged having fired in the region and said that it was examining the incident.
Eye witnesses interviewed by Reuters said that Israeli tanks had drawn at least two shells on a crowd of thousands of people, who had gathered on the main eastern road through Khan Younis in the hope of obtaining food from rescue trucks that use the route.
“All of a sudden, they let us move forward and gathered, then shells began to fall, tank shells,” said Alaa, an eyewitness, interviewed by Reuters at Nasser Hospital, where the injured victims were extended on the ground and in corridors due to a lack of space.
“No one looks at these people with mercy. People die, they are torn, to get food for their children. Look at these people, all these people are torn to make flour feed their children.”
Palestinian doctors said that at least 59 people were killed and 221 injured in the incident, including at least 20 of them. Losses have been transported to hospital in civil cars, ripe pousses and donkey trolleys.
It was the worst number of deaths in a single day since the aid resumed Gaza in May.
In a press release, Israeli Defense Forces (FDI) said: “Earlier in the day, a rally was identified alongside a aid distribution truck that got stuck in the Khan Younis region, and near the FDI troops operating in the region.
“The FDI is aware of the reports concerning a certain number of people injured in Fid Fire following the approach of the crowd. The details of the incident are being examined. The FDI regrets any prejudice to uninvited individuals and operates to minimize the damages as much as possible while retaining the security of our troops.”
Hundreds of help sites have killed in recent weeks
Doctors said that at least 14 other people had also been killed in separate Israeli shots and air strikes elsewhere in the enclave, taking stock from Tuesday to at least 65.
The incident was the last of Palestinian almost daily murders looking for help in the last three weeks, because Israel has partially raised a total blockade in the territory he had imposed for almost three months.
Israel has channeled a large part of the aid it now allows Gaza through a new group supported by the United States and Israel, the Gaza Humaninian Foundation (GHF), which operates a handful of distribution sites in areas guarded by Israeli forces.

According to doctors, at least 20 people were killed and 200 others injured in Israeli fire near a Rafah aid distribution site, doctors said. Deaths are the latest mass shots that have killed at least 300 Palestinians in recent weeks, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, while they are trying to access food thanks to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation distribution system supported by the United States.
The United Nations reject the system as inadequate, dangerous and violation of the rules of humanitarian impartiality. Israel says it is necessary to prevent Hamas fighters from diverting aid, which Hamas denies.
Gaza authorities say hundreds of Palestinians have been killed while trying to reach GHF sites, including 23 people killed by Israeli shots on Monday in Rafah in the Southern Gaza Strip.
The GHF said in a press release on Monday evening that it had distributed more than three million meals on its four distribution sites without incident.
Eyes on Iran’s War
The Gaza War was launched in October 2023 when Hamas activists attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. The military assault of Israel against Gaza killed nearly 55,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, while moving almost the entire population of 2.3 million and causing a hunger crisis.
Since last week, residents of Gaza have kept an eye on the war between Israel and Iran, which started with Israel by launching major strikes on Friday. Iran has long been a major supporter of Hamas.
Residents of the Gaza Strip have disseminated images of shipwrecked buildings in Israel struck by Iranian missiles, some have openly happy to see the Israelis experience a measure of the fear of air strikes that the Gazans have endured for 20 months.
“We live these scenes and pain daily. We are very happy that we have seen the day we have seen rubble in Tel Aviv, and they try to get out of the rubble and houses that have been destroyed above their residents,” said Saad Saad, a man of Gazan.
“The time has come for Iran to teach a lesson in the Israeli occupation,” said another, Tayseir Mohaissan.
