An audit report of EU diplomatic services, seen by Reuters and AFP, examined Israel’s actions in Gaza and occupied the West Bank.
There are indications that Israel could have violated its obligations in terms of human rights under the terms of a pact governing its links with the European Union, according to an examination of the agreement.
According to Friday, an EU document seen by the reuters and AFP press agencies, the European external action service said that Israel’s actions in Gaza were probably not in accordance with the rules established in the EU-Israel association.
“Based on the assessments carried out by independent international institutions … There are indications that Israel would be in violation of its human rights obligations,” said the audit written by the EU diplomatic service.
The report comes after months of in -depth concern in European capitals concerning Israel’s operations in Gaza and the humanitarian situation in the enclave.
“The continuous restrictions of Israel to the supply of food, medication, medical equipment and other vital supplies affect the entire Gaza population on the territory affected,” he said.
The document includes a section dedicated to the situation in Gaza – covering questions related to denial of humanitarian aid, attacks with a significant number of victims, attacks on medical facilities, travel and lack of responsibility – as well as the situation in occupied West Bank, including the violence of the colonists, Reuters reported.
The document said it is based on “the facts verified and the assessments carried out by independent international institutions, and emphasizing the most recent events in Gaza and in the West Bank”.
The audit was launched last month in response to the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, in a push supported by 17 states and led by the Netherlands.
The best EU diplomat, Kaja Kallas, is expected to present the conclusions of the report to the Bloc Foreign Ministers in Brussels on Monday.
EU-Israel contract
Under the EU-Israel agreement, which entered into force in 2000, the two parties agreed that their relationship would be based on “respect for human rights and democratic principles”.
The suspension of the agreement would require a unanimous decision of the 27 members of the block, something that diplomats said from the start was practically impossible.
According to AFP, the diplomats said they expect Kallas to offer options on a response to the next meeting of foreign ministers in July.
“The question is … how many member states would always be ready to do nothing and to continue to say that it is as usual,” said an unnamed diplomat at the news agency before the conclusions of the revision.
“It is really important not to fall into Israel’s trap to look elsewhere,” they said.
The EU is Israel’s largest trading partner, with 42.6 billion euros ($ 48.2 billion) in property negotiated in 2024. The service of services reached 25.6 billion euros (29.5 billion dollars) in 2023.
The mission of Israel to the EU did not immediately respond to a request for comments from Reuters on the content of the document.
