When Priyanka Jain, co-founder and CEO of the Vaginal Test and Care Company Evvy, Hiring, she knows what She wants See a candidate.
She is looking for Someone “who goes beyond what your work title tells you to do,” she says. This could mean including a section of “interest” on your CV which lists volunteering or external projects, or simply illustrating your passion for your field with achievements at work.
She also knows what she does not want to see in a candidate: someone who is only interested in doing strategy. When the execution is “outside their genius zone”, she says, “it’s always a little worrying”.
Each company needs people who develop strategies on how to improve operations, as well as people executing. But during a startup, where staff and resources are limited, “you don’t have the luxury of having strategy people and execution,” said Jain.
Each person must be able to “understand what is the problem”, she says, in addition, “you must also be able to enter the weeds, determine the solution, write yourself, put in the world”.
In the end, with regard to strategy and execution in a startup, “everyone must be able to do both.”
To extinguish if the candidates can both ideation and wrap their sleeves, Jain asks questions about a problem they had in an old business and how they resolved it.
“The level of detail in which anyone is able to obtain with regard to the process and not only the deliverable tells you about how they were really involved,” she said. If they can explain exactly the necessary measures to solve the problem, they have probably taken these measures themselves – and could start again to solve the problems in their next company.
The other element that Jain is looking for in the response of a candidate is their attitude. “If they are enthusiastic about both sides,” she says, “it’s always a very good sign.” They will carry this level of enthusiasm to get things done in the future.
