A huge man’s hunting entered a second day on Sunday in Minnesota for the alleged shooter who killed a legislator from the Democratic State while posing as a police officer – a crime that Governor Tim Walz described as “political motivation assassination”.
The suspect, whom the police identified as Vance Luther Boelter, 57, fled when police faced him at the Brooklyn Park home of the former speaker of the Minnesota Chamber, Melissa Hortman, and her husband, Mark, who were both killed.
The shooter earlier had pulled and injured another Democratic legislator, State senator John Hoffman, and his wife Yvette at their home a few kilometers away, the authorities announced.
Minnesota American senator Amy Klobuchar, a democrat, said on Sunday morning that the authorities thought that the suspect was still in the Midwest, adding that an alert had been published in the neighboring South Dakota.
“Obviously, this is politically motivated,” she said, noting that the entire delegation of the State Congress – Republicans and Democrats – has published a shared declaration condemning the shots.
The suspect left a vehicle outside Hortman’s house in the suburbs of Minneapolis who looked like a police SUV, including flashing lights, and contained a “manifesto” and a target list of other politicians and institutions, officials said.
The authorities had not publicly identified a specific reason on Saturday evening.
Boelter has links to evangelical ministries and claimed to be a security expert with experience in the Gaza Strip and Africa, according to Online publications and the public files examined by Reuters.
“There were clearly by the line with abortion, because of the groups on the list and other things that I heard were in this manifesto. So that was one of his motivations,” Klobuchar said.
Boelter was appointed in 2016 by the predecessor of Walz to a state advisory council, where he served alongside Hoffman, according to the state archives. The authorities said they were not yet certain if the two had significant interactions.
“There is certainly overlapping of a few public meetings, I will say, with Senator Hoffman and the individual,” said the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Help. Drew Evans told journalists on Saturday.
“But we do not know the nature of the relationship or if they really knew each other.”
The murder was the last of a series of episodes of high-level political violence, including the attack on the husband of the former Democrat lecturer in the United States Nancy Pelosi in 2022, the attempted assassination of Donald Trump During the presidential campaign last year and a criminal fire attack at the house of the Governor of Pennsylvania Josh Shapiro in April.
Republican politicians and democrats across the country reacted with shock and horror and have made calls to alleviate increasingly lively political rhetoric.
Klobuchar said she saw Hortman and Hoffman at a political dinner on Friday, just a few hours before they were slaughtered.
“We started together in politics, mothers with young children, and in a way, she was able to balance the knowledge of each door, knocking on each house in her district, while raising two children-the head of the scouts, she taught on Sunday school,” she said about Hortman, 55.
Klobuchar said that the two Hoffmans “were suspended” after undergoing surgery for several ball injuries.
The attacks began around 2 am on Saturday, when the authorities said that a shooter had shot the Hoffmans to their home in Champlin, before driving several kilometers to Hortman’s home in Brooklyn Park.
Police went proactively to Hortman’s house at the request of a sergeant who responded to Hoffman’s attack, the other politicians could be threatened. The shooter immediately shot the two officers when they arrived, and on their return, he ran.
The FBI has released photos suspect carrying a rubber mask and a police type uniform.
David Carlson, 59, told Reuters that he shared a house in Minneapolis with Boelter for more than a year and saw him for the last time Friday evening. He said he had received a disturbing Boelter text around 6 a.m. on Saturday.
“He said he could be dead soon,” said Carlson, who called the police.
The former speaker of the State House, Melissa Hortman, and her husband was killed by someone pretending to be a police officer on Saturday, and a second legislator and his wife were injured in what the governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, said that political motivation shots.
Police said they had found leaflets with “no kings” printed on them in the suspect’s car in reference to the thousands of Protests “no kings” nationwide Saturday against the Trump administration, but that there was no known direct link between him and the movement.
“Such horrible violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America,” Trump said in a statement.
Trump faced criticism from certain opponents of the use of inflammatory rhetoric at times when he spoke of his political rivals.
During one of his first moves in office this year, Trump forgave almost everyone accused of having participated in the attack on the Capitol of January 6, 2021.
