Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, confirms that he rejected the large Saudi move to stay in Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes confirmed that he had rejected a huge offer from Saudi Arabia and chosen instead of staying in Manchester United, saying that he wanted to “continue to play at the highest level”.
Addressing media in a camp in Portugal before the semi-final of the League of Nations on Wednesday against Germany in Munich, the football midfielder confirmed that he had received an “exciting offer” from Al-Hilal but wanted to be part of the reconstruction of manager Ruben Amorim in Old Trafford.
According to reports, Al-Hilal was ready to pay United up to 100 million British pounds ($ 135 million) for the 30-year-old Portugal International.
“The president of Al-Hilal called me and asked me if I wanted to settle there,” confirmed Fernandes, saying that the club “had waited for me to think of my future”.
“I spoke to the gaffer and he asked me not to go,” said Fernandes, adding: “Man United said they didn’t want to sell me.
“They said if I wanted to go, I could, but they didn’t need money.”
The player said that a transfer would have been “easy” with several Portuguese players already in Saudi Arabia, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves, but added: “I want to play as high as possible.
“I want to play major competitions. I know I can still, and I want to be happy to do what I like most.
“For better or for worse, this is how I see football and I am passionate about football and this is the decision I made.”
Man United ‘Need’ Fernandes
United endured their worst finish of the era of the Premier League, finishing 15th. They also lost the Europa League final against Tottenham.
The captain of United Fernandes was one of the few players to emerge with the credit of a disastrous season, scoring 19 goals and performing 19 assists in all competitions.
The former captain of United Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports expert, said that development was “significant”.
“I think there was an element of this situation which meant that United gets this level of money, for someone from Bruno’s age, obviously, you could not say that it would have been a bad deal,” he said.
“But, on the other hand, the star player of Manchester United – the only player, sometimes – for four, five, six years, was Bruno Fernandes. He is so important.”

Fernandes made 290 appearances and scored 98 goals for United since its passage of 47 million pounds ($ 63 million) from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020.
