Pete Davidson is entering a new chapter, 20 pounds heavier, off drugs, and single, while gearing up for his return to “Saturday Night Live.” Before “SNL50: The Anniversary Celebration,” aired on NBC and Peacock, Davidson found himself getting emotional after watching his original SNL audition tape.

In “Beyond Saturday Night,” a Peacock docu-series about the show, Davidson reflected on his 2014 audition, where a 20-year-old version of himself, dressed in a “Spider-Man” T-shirt from Target, stood in front of Lorne Michaels and the “SNL” team.

“The innocence in my eyes made me so sad,” he admitted to Page Six. “Showbiz is so tough, and I didn’t know how tough it was. I picked the wrong business to have a mental illness and go into. I’m one of the most insecure and sad people ever, and I picked the most insecure, sad business to go into.”

Davidson, who has been open about his struggles with borderline personality disorder, PTSD, and sobriety, also shared how isolating his early years on “SNL” felt. As one of the youngest cast members ever, he found it hard to connect with his older co-stars.

“Everyone was 10-plus years older than me and I had a hard time fitting in. No one was mean, but there was an age difference,” he said. “They were getting married, having kids, and I was like, ‘Do you guys want to come over to play video games?!’ So I hung out with Lorne.”

Michaels took a chance on Davidson, though even the legendary producer wasn’t entirely sure what to do with him at first.

“Lorne told me, ‘I’m not really sure what to do with you, but I know you should be here,’” Davidson recalled. “And it was life-changing. I owe him my entire career and I love the guy. He’s one of my closest friends.”

Even when Davidson doubted himself, Michaels offered reassurance. “He’s my Tony Soprano and I’m his Christopher Moltisanti,” he joked. “One day he might kill me, and it would be worth it!”
