Meta ‘concerned’ by Iran telling citizens to stop using WhatsApp, spokesperson says

The messaging platform Whatsapp On Tuesday, the company is “concerned” that demand is not available for people in Iran after the country’s public television has urged users to remove the application.

Iranian officials had warned people to stop using WhatsApp, Telegram and other “localization -based applications”, accusing them of “the main methods of Israel to identify and target individuals”, according to a report by the state diffuser of the Irib Irib country earlier on Tuesday.

“We fear that these false reports are an excuse so that our services are blocked at a time when people need it most. All the messages you send to family and friends on WhatsApp are encrypted from start to finish, nobody, except that the sender and the recipient have access to these messages, not even WhatsApp,” said a Whatsapp spokesperson in a statement to CBS News.

“We do not follow your precise location, we do not hold any people from who everyone sends a message, and we do not follow the personal messages that people send themselves,” said the spokesperson for Whatsapp. “We do not provide bulk information to any government. For more than a decade, Meta provided coherent transparency reports which include limited circumstances when WhatsApp information has been requested.”

The complaint made by the Iranian state diffuser occurs while the country’s Islamic regime seems to have reprimanded on the internet access to the Internet, while the Israeli-Iranian conflict is intensifying.

Friday, Israel launched air strikes Targeting Iranian nuclear installations, superior scientists and military commanders, to which Iran responded with dozens of ballistic missiles. The countries have exchanged waves of missile attacks in the days that followed. At least two dozen people were killed in Israel, according to the Israeli army, and dozens were injured. Tehran said that at least 224 people had been killed in Iran since Friday.

The Internet surveillance group Netblocks said that analysis On Tuesday, a 75% reduction in the use of the Internet across the country, the data that the group indicates “comes in the midst of an increasing conflict with Israel and is likely to limit the public’s ability to access information at a critical time”.

WhatsApp belongs to Meta, the Facebook, Instagram and Threads parent company. Meta platforms have already been targeted by the Iranian autocratic government during the country’s troubles. In 2022, when the Iranian government faced many demonstrations against the death of the 22 -year -old student Mahsa Amini During his stay in Iranian police custody, Meta said The Iranian authorities had forced the use of Instagram in the country in order to delete the capacity of the demonstrators to share information.

Although WhatsApp is an encrypted application from start to finish, it is not impenetrable. Last month, the Israeli software company NSO Group was ordered to pay $ 167 million WhatsApp to hack 1,400 people, including activists and journalists, in 2019. Piracy involved the use of malicious software called Pegasus, which can be installed remotely on mobile phones to access, among others, GPS parameters.
