In 1998, Michael Jordan lacked a pair of his emblematic Black and Red Air Jordan 13 to win a victory at home in match 2 of his last NBA championship – and now these are the most expensive sneakers for sale at auction.
Winning game sneakers sold for $ 2.2 million at Sotheby’s in New York Tuesday, breaking the sneakers’ auction save of $ 1.47 million, set in 2021 by a pair of Nike air vessels that Jordan wore his career earlier.
The sale arrives during “Jordan Year” – a reference to the emblematic jersey of the NBA Numer 23 player.
Last year, Jordan’s Jersey 1 Jersey, also from the 1998 final, became the most expensive element of worn sports memories for auction when he has recovered $ 10.1 million during a sale of Sotheby.
Jordan’s farewell race with the Chicago Bulls is often called “The Last Dance”, after the title of an ESPN and Netflix documentary that told the season. Jordan announced his (second) retirement for weeks before the final, leading to the six -game series against Utah Jazz becoming the most watched in the history of the NBA, based on the Nielsen TV ratings. (Jordan would later return from 2001 to 2003 to play with the Washington Wizards, but did not win another championship).
“The sporting memories carried by Michael’s game have repeatedly proven the most elite and coveted articles on the market,” said Brahm Wachter, the streetwear leader and modern Sotheby, in a press release before the sale. “However, articles in his” Last Dance “season are of a larger scale and magnitude as we see with our record sale of his match 1 jersey in 2022.”
The pair of sneakers Sold Tuesday were worn during match 2, in Salt Lake City, that the Bulls won 93-88 after losing match 1, Jordan marking 37 points. They are the last pair of black and red air Jordan 13 that Jordan has ever worn on the field for a NBA match, noted a press release from Sotheby.
After Match 2, Jordan signed and offered all the shoes worn at the Ball Boy in the visitor’s locker room, as he was known, according to Sotheby’s.
Air Jordan 13 sneakers played in a sale of sports memories called “Victoriam”, which presented articles carried by athletes such as Tom Brady, Kobe Bryant and Roger Federer. Several other articles in Jordan have been included in the two -part auction, with a Bulls jersey from 1998, brought to the match, and a pair of 1985 Air Jordan 1 of up to $ 508,000 and $ 127,000 respectively.
Among the other upper grounds, included one of the shirts that fire Kobe Bryant shirts, which sold for more than $ 406,000, and a football jersey, worn by the late Pelé during its beginnings for the New York Cosmos in 1975, which sold more than $ 177,000.
