New Caledonia unrest, one year on: A healthcare system in tatters

French overseas territory in New Caledonia faces an increasing crisis. The number of health workers has dropped considerably, in particular since the unrest in May 2024. In response, the authorities offer incentives – such as annual contracts and free accommodation – to attract doctors and nurses on the island. But in the meantime, volunteers work to train residents of basic medical care, as clinics and hospitals on the island remain closed due to staff shortages. Our colleagues from France 2, with the Guillaume Gougeon of France 24.
