The supreme chief of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, officially opened a new seaside resort in the Coastal Tourist Zone of Wonsan Kalma in the country – six years after its end, the state media reported on Thursday.
The massive tourist area, located on North Korea The east coast, is part of a key project pushed by Kim Jong one for years to promote tourism in the notoriously exclusive country.

With “great satisfaction”, Kim attended an inaugural ceremony for the Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist area, said the Central Korean Central news agency (KCNA), adding that the complex can accommodate around 20,000 visitors and that the country would quickly build more large -scale tourist areas.
According to the national press agency, the tourist area offers sunbathing facilities along a beach of four kilometers and various sports, fun, commercial and public services as well as a wide variety of accommodation, all year round.

The region has long been a vacation destination for the inhabitants, but Kim wanted to transform it into a tourist hotspot of $ sprawling dollars inspired by “Korean style tourism”.

Tourism in North Korea is not an industry targeted by the United Nations sanctions, but the elusive country has not collaborated with any foreign partner to develop the Wonsan project due to economic sanctions on its nuclear weapons programs.
North Korea is one of the most impoverished countries in the world and has been led by the Kim family since 1948, which has been the majority of the capital of the state isolated in its military, national and monuments in Pyongyang, the capital of the country.
The new seaside resort will be open to national visitors on July 1, confirmed KCNA, but there was no mention to authorize international tourists.
North Korea closed its borders in 2020 at the start of the COVVI-19 pandemic, but has slowly raised restrictions since 2023, granting Russian visitors the following year.
Russian tourist groups have been authorized in North Korea, but its capital is generally closed to regular tourism, although in April, it organized a marathon event with foreign participants.
The Russian ambassador to North Korea and the Embassy staff were present as special guys during the opening ceremony of the seaside resort, said KCNA.
Russia and North Korea combine to develop tourism in the two countries and have restarted a direct suburban train service between their capitals, Moscow and Pyongyang, for the first time since 2020.
