One Of Netflix’s Best 2025 Shows Has Brutal Twist

Raphael Bob-Waksberg more or less The adult animation was reinvented as he created “BojaCack Horseman”. Sure, just like another adult animated show that made her debut at about the same time, “Rick and Morty”, “Bojack” mixed up in absurdism and experiment. But the thing that made Bob-Waksberg and Netflix’s pioneering cartoon about a speech-speaking horse was the way it was missing. Where “Rick and Morty” would continue for a decade of unremitting comedy, nihilism, and parody animation parody, “Bojack Horseman” was a mature, nuanced drama with complex characters and difficult subjects. In addition to all this, it was a biting satire in the entertainment industry, directed by the Antihero protagonist as compelling as Walter White or Tony Soprano (just animated and again horse).

Thanks to his success, “BojaCack Horseman” also ended the habit of more dramatic American adult animated exhibitions – a form that had previously been synonymous with “The Simpsons” and for the like for decades. As a result of the “bootack” we got series such as “Castlevan” and “Arcane”, ” as well as the excellent “not to do” and “pantheon.” These were presentations that combined the more dramatic storytelling, fantasy horror and sci-fi, so they can try both their shape and a larger animation tool in different ways, always their body.

Now Bob-Waksberg has returned with another animated exhibition from the trauma of the whole family … Only without talking animals this time. The series is called “Long Story Short” and follows Schwooper siblings from childhood to adulthood and everything (their joy, sorrows, profits and failures). It is also the first episode of 2025 so far the first episode alone (which was shown to those attending the 2025 Annecy Animation Festival), which includes a brutal but brilliant turn directly by Dan Fogelman “This is Us”.

Long story short takes a page of this is US playbook

“Long Story Short” is a family sitcom “in the vein of the king of the hill. Of course, this is still a Bob-Waksberg show, so there is plenty of family trauma … or, as he presented it during the Annecy performance, “small” T ‘traumas. introduces her girlfriend Jen (Angelique Cabraral) to her family during her youngest bars in Mitzvah.

What makes the animation series a unique Get-Go is the use of storytelling at that time. The “long story” takes place over several periods of time, following Schwooper siblings as children, teenagers and adults. According to Bob-Waksberg, the idea was to make the audience emotionally invest in the characters in the series, in which they would be looking at eight or nine seasons, only much less seasons, which include a small number of episodes. “Boyhood” and “Six feet under” ending There were also sources of inspiration in the sense that they also show characters to change for many years with a relatively short number of display time.

The structure of the first episode “Long Story Short” (which jumps forward in time more than once, combined with the way it occurs in different periods of periods, brings to mind “this is us” and how this show used as a way to develop its characters while also introducing the plot. Playbook (which he used again for this year’s phenomenal “paradise”).

It is clear that it is too early to compare the “Long Story Short” event to the “Bojack Horseman” as a whole, but the former first episode alone makes a fantastic half -hour television and a very promising start to what could be another vibrant, emotionally complex and otherwise cheerful show.

“Long story” premiere on August 22, 2025, Netflix.
