Nicknamed “Blade Runner” for its prothetical legs in carbon fiber, Pistorius, now 38 years old, was formerly the darling of the sports world, in competition at the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games as well as to go around the United States and appear in many major talk shows.
In August 2012, he became the first double amputated to compete at the London Olympic Games, where he reached the semi-final of 400 meters against fully capillary athletes.
But the worship and the attention of the media suddenly turned to the world shock on Valentine’s Day 2013 when her girlfriend, the 29-year-old model, Reeva Steenkamp, was shot down several times through the door of the locked bathroom in the house of Pistorius in a closed community in Pretoria.
Pistorius testified during his highly publicized and televised legal case that he had confused Steenkamp with a burglar. Three of his four shots hit Steenkamp.
He was found guilty of murder and finally sentenced to 13 years and 5 months in prison. He spent nine years behind bars in Pretoria before his release, and he will remain in parole until 2029.
Conrad Dormhel, lawyer for Pistorius, confirmed to the Reuters news agency that his client had participated in the race.
Pistorius has lived at his uncle’s home in Pretoria since her release.
