Innumerable memes exist on how generation X is a hard and often neglected generation, and there are a million additional memes on the way we are also an apathetic generation (say what you want from us, I don’t care). The whole of the pipe and cycling alone until the night “completely shaped us many children who grew fiercely independent and resilient in the 1980s. But we were also one of the first generations to be really babySits by television and that also played a huge role in the life of millions of Latchkey children without right.
It was only when I looked at Pee-Wee like him, the new documentary in two parts on Max on Paul Reubens’ life and career (alias Pee-Wee Herman), that he struck me to what extent we were lucky to grow at a time when a character like Pee-Wee existed in the dominant current and the idea that something could be bizarre-and kissed for that.
Pee-Wee’s oddity was obvious and obvious in his films and on television in Play-Wee’s Playhouse. Here is this ageless man-child in a gray suit that lived alone, whose precious possession was his bike, which shouted whenever a secret word was pronounced. My household was regularly lacking in tape ribbon as a result of my use to stretch my face in a grotesque skin mask with a turned nose, thanks to Pee-Wee. The character seemed to be someone who was able to live the fantastic life of each child, and it was the initial draw. He was ambitious in his stupidity.
But what the documentary clearly shows is how deliberate Pee-Wee’s choices were, in particular in the creation of his CBS Saturday Morning Pee-Wee’s Playhouse television program. It was a show that did everything possible to launch color players in important roles (including Law & Order S. Epatha Merkerson and Laurence Fishburne, who both appear in the DOC), and created an inclusive environment that embraced the unusual and eccentric. None of this was by accident. Natasha Lyonne, who appeared in the child program, said that being in the show “felt like permission to be myself”. I would like to think that this authorization to kiss what others may not consider as “normal” is one of the reasons why our generation has identified so much with the genres whose names say voluminous: alternative music, indie movie, underground comedy. These things already existed, but ours was the generation that labeled them.
How many other children’s television shows have launched the Disco androgyne star Grace Jones in their Christmas special? (The special also presented appearances of Charo, Joan Rivers, KD Lang, Cher, Oprah Winfrey and Little Richard, an attempt to create several entertainment levels for several generations. Muppets have also done it in a level of more Vaudevillian campier. You can do the opposite of things, you can do what you want. ”
“I just put a lot in the Pee-Wee game house that I thought:” Why not? “” He adds. This includes things like pee dance in high heels and the holding of a wedding ceremony between him and a bowl of fruit salad. (What is more fascinating is that even if this kind of thing was considered to be offset at the time, it was not censored and did not trigger a backlash of the way it could potentially be able today.)
Pee-Wee Herman was a creation of art of the performance of an actor who chose never to appear as himself in public that much later in his career. It is because Paul Reubens never allowed anyone to know him as well as his creative process (a fact that he expresses his regret in the film), and we did not know at the time how intentional and subversive with his work.
Reubens died in 2023 when he was still finishing interviews for the film and he had trouble giving up the creative control of the doc – he is soft to see him express his triumphs and regrets in these interviews and not see the finished product. I was a child in love with pee, but after looking at the documentary, I am grateful that he was finished even following the death of Rubens. It is a book set necessary for Rubens’ career; Without that, I do not even know if I would have made the impact he had on so many small crazy people.
