The American Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, announced on Friday that the USNS Harvey Milk would be renamed after a sailor of the Second World War who received the medal of honor, stripping the ship named an activist of the rights of homosexuals who served during the Korean War.
In a video published on social networks, Hegseth said that he “took out the policy of the denomination of ships”.
The new name of the ship will honor the chief of the navy Oscar V. Peterson, who received the highest military decoration posthumously for his actions during the 1942 Corail Sea Battle in the Pacific.
The decision is HegSeth’s latest decision to destroy the names of ships and military bases given by the democratic administration of former American president Joe Biden, who, in many cases, has chosen to honor the soldiers who were women, minorities, the 2SLBGTQ + community and more.
He follows the previous actions of Hegseth and the American president Donald Trump to purge all the programs, politicians, books and mentions on social networks from reference to diversity, equity and inclusion in the army and elsewhere.
Hegseth’s announcement occurs during the month of pride, as is the Pentagon campaign to force transgender troops outside the American army.
“We are not rejoicing the ship to anything political. These are not political activists,” said Hegseth, who ordered the secretary of the navy, John Phelan at the earliest, to build up a small team to rename the reappointment oil of the USNS Harvey Milk.
He said that “Peterson’s spirit of self -sacrifice and the concern for his teammates were in accordance with the best traditions in the Navy”.
Pride Toronto says that the festival faces a major financial deficit after several business sponsors have withdrawn their support, that the festival executive director connects American companies moving the efforts of Dei under the Trump administration.
When Hegseth announced the decision to rename the ship, officials defended it as an effort to align themselves with Trump’s objectives and HegSeth to “restore warlike culture”.
Peterson sat at USS Neosho, which was also oil. The ship was damaged during the Battle of the Corail Sea, and even if Peterson was injured, it managed to close the partition valves to maintain the operational ship. He died of his injuries.
The Navy in 1943 appointed an escort ship after Peterson. The USS Peterson sat for more than two decades and was put out of service in June 1965.
The USNS Harvey Milk was appointed in 2016 by the secretary of the time, Ray Mabus, who said at the time that the class of John Lewis’ Oilers are named after leaders who fought for civil and human rights.
Harvey Milk, who was represented by Sean Penn in a 2008 Oscar -winning film, served for four years in the navy before he was forced to be gay.
He later became one of the first openly gay candidates elected to the public service in San Francisco. He was assassinated in 1978 by a former unhappy supervisor from the city.
