Perched in the hills outside Rome is the Palais de Castel Gandolfo, the summer house by the lake of centuries for the popes, which also houses the Vatican Observatory, established in 1891 to help fill the chasm between religion and science. The correspondent Seth Doane speaks with scientists and students for whom Church observations on heavens are a way to unite people beyond faith.
