Self-Serving Support? Devin Haney Cheers On George Kambosos Jr. Before Crucial Fight, With Potential Trilogy Looming If Haney’s Upcoming Match Falters
Devin Haney encouraged his former foe George Kambosos Jr. on X today, urging him ahead of his fight against the young gun, Jake Wyllie, this Saturday, March 22nd, with fans being able to watch the event live on DAZN at 4 AM ET, 1 AM PT, 8 AM GMT, or 7 PM AEDT.
The event will take place at the Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney Olympic Park, in Australia. Ringwalks will begin at approximately 7:05 AM ET for the Kambosos vs. Wyllie main event.
This is a must-win fight for Kambosos, 31, who needs a victory to get a world title shot against IBF light welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins in June in New York City. That’s Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn’s baby that he’s got in the planning stages. However, Hearn says his plan B is to use Wyllie as the opponent for Hitchins if he’s victorious on Saturday.
Kambosos needs all the encouragement he can get, coming into Saturday’s fight against replacement opponent Wyllie (16-1, 15 KOs) with a 1-3 record in his last four fights. Ticket sales for the event are rumored to be poor, with Australian fans turning up their noses and watching Kambosos fight the little-known 24-year-old Wyllie.

One can’t help but think this is a self-serving move by Haney by motivating Kambosos with hopes of the two meeting in a trilogy in Australia if things fall apart for Devin in his May 2nd fight against Jose Ramirez. If Haney loses that fight, he’s going to need Kambosos.
In truth, it’s doubtful that it would matter if it were the highly popular Ryan Garcia as the opponent for ‘The Emperor Kambosos. Aussie fans seem to have lost interest in watching Kambosos’ fights, which promoter Eddie Hearn failed to take notice of beforehand. If he knew how bleak things were for Kambosos, he could have placed a must-watch talent kin the headliner to drive ticket sales in Sydney.
Haney dethroned then IBF, WBA, and WBO lightweight champion Kambosos in front of a massive crowd of 41,129 fans on June 5, 2022, at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. Kambosos was popular back then in Australia, coming off a win over Teofimo Lopez and worshipped by his Aussie fans.
