Steve Smith announces retirement from ODIs after Australia’s exit from Champions Trophy 2025

Steve Smith has officially retired from One-Day Internationals (ODIs) after Australia’s campaign in the Champions Trophy 2025 came to an end with a four-wicket defeat to India in the semi-final held in Dubai. This marks the conclusion of his remarkable journey in the 50-over format.

A stellar career for Australia

Smith concluded his ODI career with 170 appearances, placing him among Australia’s most experienced players in the format. He also finished as the country’s 12th highest run-scorer in ODIs, leaving behind a legacy of consistency and leadership. Smith amassed 5800 runs in ODIs with 12 hundreds and 35 half-centuries.

The 35-year-old shared his decision with teammates shortly after the loss and later addressed the media. Smith expressed gratitude towards his fellow players and recollected cherished moments of winning two ODI World Cups. He also explained that 2027 World Cup is next and it is an important time to step aside and make way for the youngsters to take over.

“It has been an incredible journey, and I have cherished every moment on the field. Winning two ODI World Cups was truly special, and I have been fortunate to share those moments with some great teammates. With the 2027 World Cup ahead, now is a good time to step aside and allow the next generation to take over,” Smith expressed in an official statement as quoted by Cricket.com.au.

Priority on Test and T20 cricket

Although stepping away from ODIs, Smith has confirmed that he will remain available for Test matches and T20Is. His decision to continue in the shortest format hints at a potential goal of representing Australia at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where T20 cricket will feature.

“My focus is now on Test cricket, with the World Test Championship final, a series against the West Indies, and an Ashes battle at home on the horizon. I still believe I have a lot to offer in the longest format of the game,” added Smith.
