Tuesday evening, the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand ordered that Cannabis consumption is restricted To medical use only, by throwing the estimated industry of $ 1 billion in a state of uncertainty.
Government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub said that cannabis had created serious social problems for young people and industry, which has exploded in recent yearshad to be reduced.
“Policy must return to its initial objective of controlling cannabis for medical use only,” Jirayu said in a press release.
The order, however, is not yet the law.
It will have to be published in the official Royal Gazette to enter into force, and the government has not indicated when it happens.
Thailand has become the first Asian country to completely decriminalize cannabis in 2022, in a decision that was extremely popular with tourists but less among the more conservative Thai.
Thousands of cannabis stores have opened through Thailand in the past three years, although it has been relatively unregulated despite multiple government attempts.
The latest decision to restrict cannabis consumption comes in the midst of broader political disorders in Thailand.
Last week, the Bhumjaithai party, previously champion of the decriminalization of cannabis, withdrew from the government’s leader coalition because of its ill -managed border conflict with Cambodia.
The Thai Chamber of Commerce previously estimated that cannabis trade could be worth $ 1.2 billion by 2025, although experts say that it has not reached its full potential due to the uncertainty that has afflicted the regulations around industry since it was decriminalized.
