The Animated Avatar Aang Film Adds a Series Veteran, Steven Yeun

It’s a good time to be a fan of the Avatar franchisebetween Nickelodeon’s all-new upcoming animated series Avatar: Seven Havens and Netflix’s (unrelated but adjacent) live-action series returning for a second and third season. The third part of the current Avatar media triangle is Nick’s upcoming trilogy of animated feature filmswith the exciting news today that Steven Yeun (Invincible, Mickey 17) is joining its voice cast.

Before you connect too many dots—because as fans well know, Yeun previously voiced Avatar Wan, the first Avataron The Legend of Korra—there’s no word yet on who he’ll be playing in the new film. Varietywhich broke the news of his casting, noted that “it’s not yet clear which of the Four Nations Yeun may hail from, as character details are being kept under wraps.”

What we do know is that the movie—directed by Lauren Montgomery, co-directed by William Mata, and based on the series Avatar: The Last Airbenderwhich was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko—will focus on the character of Aang, which presumably means it’ll take place between The Last Airbender and Korra.

And while Yeun’s character is still to be determined, we learned last year that Dave Bautista is voicing an as-yet-unnamed villain, while Eric Nam is Aang, Dionne Quan is Toph, Jessica Matten is Katara, and Román Zaragoza is Sokka.

Though the movie (presently untitled) was once slated to come out this year, it’ll now hit theaters January 30, 2026.
