But Apple has been going in this direction for some time. In 2020, the magic keyboard brought an additional port and a complete trackpad to the iPad. Then in 2022, the company introduced an external exposure support, and finally, in the 2024 Update of iPad prosThe webcam was moved to portrait mode. But this year’s update really has the impression of having reached the tilting point. And Apple also sold the premise in two very intelligent ways.
First, most iPad users can even never realize that the window functionality is there. Like many deeper iPad features, the window is purely optional and masked by default. Open an application on your iPad, and it is always by full screen. It seems likely that the average person never notices the tiny resizing icon in the lower right corner of applications. This is an important design decision because it maintains the main identity of the iPad as a simpler interface.
Second, Apple has never referred to these new elements like Mac during Keynote, but simply call them “familiar”. He even spaced the iPados and macOS outside everyone in the presentation, being careful not to attract attention to what extent these two products have become similar. Apple would never want to put two of its products against each other, and has always suggested that there are reasons for someone to have both an iPad and a Mac. But with iPados 26, let’s be real: this requires a serious cognitive dissonance to believe now.
I do not suggest that iPads will never replace the MacBook Pro. People who really need this additional performance will always flow to these most powerful Macs. But what about the much more popular laptop of Apple, the MacBook Air?
The iPad Pro and MacBook Air have always been confused for price and specifications – there is a risk of apple cannibalization to its own products. I have no doubt that Apple keeps both as long as possible, but I feel more inclined than ever to compare both. This is even more true, because the update of iPados will even be available on the basic iPad and the iPad Mini when it will be officially unrolled later this fall.
So, does all this mean that an appropriate union between iPados and macOS in the work? Or how about a touch screen macbook? In the past, Apple definitively declared that he did not intend to merge his operating systems. It was a statement that made public to the public to Wwdc in 2018. And yet, despite the finesse of these concepts seven years ago, almost anything seems possible at this stage.
