The Maldives, a dream destination in the popular Indian Ocean with tourists around the world, is threatened by the increase in sea level – a direct consequence of climate change. Scientists warn that the archipelago could even disappear by the end of the century. The country built artificial islands to support its economy, which depends strongly on tourism. But these projects accelerate coastal erosion, and NGOs are concerned with the devastating effects on reefs. As a result, some residents have already been forced to leave their homes.
