It’s been a while since Creative Assembly released a pure historic total war game. There are three kingdoms a few years ago, followed by Troy, a saga match. The two had important mythological elements with generals with superpowers unique unit, fantastic units like tigers tigers and minotators, and historical modes that were at best afterwards. It wasn’t much for fans of chewing history.
It changed with the total war: Pharaoh. Located during the chaos of the collapse of the Bronze Age, Pharaoh was released in mixed criticisms due to his small scope, the map featuring Egypt, Canaan and certain parts of Anatolia. A massive free update has brought enormous improvements to the game. The card is extended to include all classic Mesopotamia, Anatolia and Greece, and there are dozens of new factions, including Babylon, Assyria, Elam, Uratu, The Sea People, Troy and more.
The gameplay mechanisms are well refined, with a distinct royalty and government mechanisms based on the region in which you play, improved diplomacy and commercial resources that really count. As with the other games in the series, Pharaoh is a sandbox, allowing you to build your kingdom as you see fit, that it means looting and burning around the world as a nomadic sea or preserving the civilization of the collapse of Babylon or the Hittites.
As a person with more than 3,000 hours spread over various war games in total, I feel comfortable saying that total war: Pharaoh is not only one of the best war games in total in recent years, it is one of the best strategy games, period.
