Tristan Tate faces probe over alleged Romanian election interference

The Romanian authorities have launched an investigation into the American-British influencer Tristan Tate on allegations that he has violated electoral laws by posting political content on social networks during the recent presidential elections of the country.

The investigation, confirmed by police sources, is focused on a publication on social networks that Tate would have shared on election day and included direct or implicit political messaging, which is illegal in Romania.

Tate, 36, is the younger brother of controversial influencer Andrew Tate, 38, a self -proclaimed misogynist. The pair has monitoring of social networks combined of more than 13 million.

The two are under investigation by the Romanian authorities in a separate case compared to a certain number of accusations which they deny.

The last investigation was opened by the police from Ilfov’s county after receiving an official complaint.

It is alleged that Tate may have tried to influence voters through the social media post, which can constitute violations of interference and country elections during the limited periods.

He was summoned for interrogation on Tuesday. Andrew is not involved in this case, according to official sources.

The BBC contacted the Tate representatives to comment. He did not publish any public declaration concerning the survey.

But in a video article apparently published on X on elections, Tate says that it “does not campaign” and as “American, using an American platform, in Dubai, to talk about political questions”, he “is not subject to the law of Romania” without campaign “.

In recent years, the Tate brothers have built a massive online presence on social networks. They have aroused frequent criticism of offensive declarations on women.

Both were arrested in Romania in December 2022, with Andrew accused of rape and trafficking in human beings and Tristan suspected of human trafficking.

They both denied charges and spent several months under residence. A year and a half later, in August 2024, they faced new allegations in Romania, including sexual relations with a minor and those in trafficking, which they all deny.

They are also faced with 21 accusations in the United Kingdom, including rape, real bodily lesions and human trafficking.

At the time of an arrest warrant obtained by the Bedfordshire police in March 2024, the tates declared that they “categorically rejected all the accusations” and were “very innocent men”.

A Romanian court judged that they could only be extradited to the United Kingdom once the procedure separate against them in Romania has concluded.

Prosecutors unexpectedly raised a travel ban from two years earlier this year, after which the brothers traveled from Romania in the American state of Florida by a private plane in February 2025.

They returned to Romania in March 2025, telling journalists that “innocent men did not flee”.
