Trump has signed a proclamation that also restricts the journey of people from seven additional countries.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed a proclamation imposing a complete travel ban on people in 12 countries and restricting citizens in seven other countries, reports the Associated Press News Agency.
Prohibited countries include Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
In addition to the ban, which comes into force on Monday, there will be increased restrictions on people in Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.
“I have to act to protect national security and the national interest of the United States and its people,” said Trump in his proclamation.
During his first mandate in 2017, Trump published an executive decree prohibiting travel in the United States by citizens of seven countries with a Muslim predominance: Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.
People in the named countries were either forbidden to go on their flights to the United States or detainees in American airports after landing. The people affected included tourists, people visiting friends and family, as well as students and teachers in the United States and businessmen.
The order, often called “Muslim ban” or “travel ban”, was reworked in the midst of legal challenges, until a version was confirmed by the Supreme Court in 2018 which prohibited the categories of travelers and immigrants from Iran, Somalia, Yemen, Syria and Libya, as well as officials from the North Korean government and the Venezuean government.
Trump defended his initial travel ban for national security reasons, arguing that he was aimed at protecting the United States and said he was not anti-Muslim. However, Trump had called for a ban on traveling on Muslims during his first campaign for the White House.
