US President Donald Trump has called on Israel to “forgive” Benjamin Netanyahu, who is tried for alleged corruption, or completely abandon the case.
He also affirmed in an article on social networks that the United States had saved Israel – alluding to his intervention in the War of Israel with Iran – and “saves” Netanyahu.
The Israeli Prime Minister denies the accusations of corruption, fraud and violation of confidence, for which he has been judged since 2020.
Netanyahu wrote her own article by thanking Trump “for your moving support for me and your huge support for Israel”.
The main leader of the opposition of Israel, Yair, Lapid, criticized Trump’s statement, saying that he should not “intervene in a legal process of an independent state”.
Trump’s position occurs for days after having reprimanded Israel for having attacked Iran after announcing a cease-fire contract between the two following a 12-day missile exchange.
Netanyahu praised Trump’s decision to bomb Iran’s nuclear installations on Sunday, calling it a “daring” decision.
Publishing on his social platform Truth, Trump described his longtime ally as a “great hero, who has done so much” for Israel and a “warrior”.
He said Netanyahu’s trial should be “canceled immediately” or should be designed, adding that he had learned that Netanyahu should appear before the court on Monday. Netanyahu appeared several times in court since the start of the trial.
Trump described the affair against Netanyahu as a “witch hunt” – a term he has used several times to describe the investigations on his own alleged reprehensible acts in the United States, adding: “This parody of justice cannot be authorized!”
After Trump said that there was “no one I know who could have worked in better harmony” with him, Netanyahu said: “We will continue to work together to defeat our common enemies, release our hostages and quickly develop the circle of peace.”
But Yair Lapid suggested that the intervention attempt could be part of a calculated decision by Trump.
“I hope and I guess it’s a reward [Trump] given [Netanyahu] Because he plans to put him pressure on Gaza and to force, to force him to make a hostage agreement that will end the war, “Yair Lapid told Israel News, Ynet.
Netanyahu’s trials took place in the context of the conflicts in which Israel has been initiated since the deadly and unprecedented attack on October 7, 2023, leading to delays in legal proceedings.
In particular, the duration of the war against Hamas in Gaza led to affirmations of some that Netanyahu wants to extend the fighting to delay the elections and the conclusion of its trials.
