The White House says that the American president deploys 2,000 guards to tackle “anarchy” as protests against immigration raids continue.
President Donald Trump deploys 2,000 troops of the National Guard in the city of Los Angeles in California, where immigration repression triggered Protests and clashes For a second day.
The White House said in a statement on Saturday that Trump deployed the guards to “tackle anarchy that was authorized to adopt” in the second most populated city in the United States.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, a democrat, opposed the decision of the Republican president, saying in an article on X that he was “deliberately inflammatory and would only worsen tensions”.
During the demonstrations on Saturday, federal agents confronted dozens of demonstrators in the primordial district of southeast Los Angeles, deploying tear gas in a street dotted with overturned Caddiss, while the crowd called for immigration and customs application (ICE) to leave their city.
Some demonstrators agitated the Mexico flag and had a face covered with respiratory masks.
The demonstrations followed reports on continuous immigration raids near a renovation store in the region.
There had been confrontations in Los Angeles in the previous night, when ice agents went down to several places in the city and arrested at least 44 people for alleged immigration violations.
After the arrests, the demonstrators gathered in the evening in front of a federal detention center, chanting: “L free them, let them stay!”
Some were holding panels with anti-ice slogans and graffiti scribbled on the building.
The mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, condemned the immigration raids and said that they were supposed to “sow terrorized” in the second city in the country.
Trump, in turn, reprimanded Newsom and Bass in an article on his social platform Truth.
“If Governor Gavin Newscum, from California, and mayor Karen Bass, from Los Angeles, cannot do his job, which everyone knows that they cannot, then the federal government will intervene and solve the problem, riots and looters, the way it should be resolved !!!” He wrote.
The repression of immigration is part of Trump’s commitment to deport the record number of people in the country without documentation and to lock the American-mexic border. The White House has set an ice goal to stop at least 3,000 migrants per day.
But people living in the country legally, including some having a permanent residence, were also taken in the repression of radical immigration, which led to legal challenges.
Rosiland Jordan of Al Jazeera, postponing Washington, DC, said that Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard aroused concerns across the country.
“There has been no deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles since 1991, during the riots after the police beat Rodney King. It is therefore an important step,” she said.
“But there are many questions in the United States, whether or not the president has the legal power to send the members of the National Guard, who are technically of the State Governor, not the president directly. And as we know, the Governor of California has not accepted this deployment. ”
