Anyone who attended the Vivatech Tech Fair in Paris, in France, had a glance at the very publicized Cybercab of Tesla, a two -seater robotaxi which will not include steering wheel or pedals. It is not clear if the cybercabs will never take the roads, because the company of Elon Musk is still working to develop them, but the Trump diet announced on Friday that it wanted to facilitate the approval process, because any vehicle that has no steering wheel should obtain a special exemption that can take years.
Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published a letter to say that it was going to “prioritize security” and “unleash innovation” by rationalizing approvals for exemptions to basic security standards for automated driving systems.
“To facilitate automated driving systems technology (ADS) reaching its full potential to transform road safety, the NHTSA rationalizes its exemption process for the commercial deployment of vehicles and the adoption of a dynamic and flexible approach to assess these exemptions”, ” letter reading.
“These improvements will allow the NHTSA to treat advertisements and other exemptions more quickly while allowing the NHTSA to prioritize security thanks to a custom and progressive operational surveillance approach,” continued the letter.
Federal security standards require vehicles leading to American roads present the basic types of things you expect, because if something is wrong, humans must be able to control the vehicle. But the new NHTSA letter claims that approvals for these types of vehicles can lead to “long treatment times” and that the agency wishes to “ensure that exemptions remain effective tools to feed revolutionary security technologies”.
Cybercab does not yet exist, although Musk promised during the major announcement event in October 2024 in which they would be available 2-3 years. Musk plans to launch another type of Robotaxi service in Austin this month, although the final date is still uncertain. There had been rumors that it would happen on Thursday, but that did not happen, and it seems that it will be later this month, according to Musk.
“Tively, June 22. We are super paranoid on security, so that the date can change,” tweeted Musk June 10. “The first Tesla who goes from the end of the line factory to a customer house is June 28.”
Unlike Cybercab, the new Robotaxi service from Musk to Austin simply uses Tesla Model Y vehicles that everyone can buy. We still don’t know how many remote controls will be used by remote operators. If history is a guide, there could be a lot of teleoperation, just as Musk used it in his public demonstrations for Its optimus robots.
As Bloomberg Notes, Musk has contributed to more than $ 250 million to help make the Trump election, and the rationalization of the regulatory approvals of his businesses was considered an absolute priority. But he needs to make the product first. Several articles said that Cybercab’s production will start at the end of 2026, but Musk has a long history of missing deadlines, if they are not fully delivering products.
If the billionaire oligarch is able to produce cybercab, regulatory approvals will probably be much, much easier, provided Musk remains in the right graces of Trump. Tesla CEO essentially accused Trump to be a recently pedophile. But what are the small charges of pedo with friends?
