US President Donald Trump should sign an executive decree ending American sanctions on Monday on Syriaaccording to his previous promise to do so.
The white house press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that this decision had been designed to “promote and support the country to stability and peace”. The sanctions will remain in place on former President Bashar Assad, his associates and others, she said.

The United States has granted Syria exemptions from sanctions in May, which was a first step towards carrying out the commitment of the Republican president to lift half a century of sanctions on a country broken by 13 years of civil war.
Trump met the acting chief of Syria, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, Saudi Arabia in May and told Al-Sharaa that he would raise sanctions and explore normalizing relations in a major change in politics between the United States and Syria.
“This is another promise made and promising,” said Leavitt on Monday.
The European Union has also followed the lifting of almost all the remaining sanctions against Syria.
Canada announced in March that it had taken measures to facilitate existing sanctions for a period of six months, which it called a “transition period” after the reversal of the Assad regime.
