Russian military bloggers say that the attack failed, the key bridge running after a brief closure.
The SBU security service of Ukraine said it had made a boost on the road and the rail bridge connecting Russia and the Crimean Crimea peninsula from Ukraine under the water level with explosives, in its third attack on the main range of supply for Russian forces in the country torn by war.
About 1,100 kg (2,420 pounds) exploded Tuesday morning to destroy the underwater pillars of the bridge over the Kerch Strait in an operation prepared over several months, said SBU press release.
“Previously, we struck the Crimea bridge twice, in 2022 and 2023. So we continued this tradition underwater today,” he said. “The bridge is now effectively in an emergency.”
The SBU shared video sequences that claimed to show an explosion next to one of the many bridge support pillars.
Russian military bloggers said the attack had been unsuccessful and hypothesized that it had been led by a Ukrainian sea drone.
The official Russian point of sale offering regular updates on the status on the bridge said that its operation had been suspended for about three hours between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. local time (01:00 and 4:00 GMT).
He gave no reason for the temporary closure, but said that the bridge had been reopened and worked as usual.
The 19 km (12 miles) Crimea bridge on the Kerch Strait is the only direct link between the Russian transport network and the Crimean Peninsula, which Moscow annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
The bridge was a flagship project by Russian President Vladimir Putin. It consists of a separate pavement and railway, both supported by concrete stilts, which give way to a greater range held by steel arches at the point where ships pass between the Black Sea and the smallest azov Sea.
The bridge was used by the Russian forces during their invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, when they crossed it to reach Crimea and from there seized certain parts of the south of Kherson and southeast of Zaporizhia.
The attack comes as the Russian forces were targeting the Ukrainian city of Sumy, killing at least three people and leaving many wounded, the municipal council and the Ministry of Health said.
The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said that at least a rocket taken from a multiple rocket launcher had not exploded and had stayed in a building.
Commenting on the attack, Zelenskyy said on his telegram channel: “This is all that we need to know the Russian wish to end this war.”
Russia told Ukraine on Monday during the peace talks in Istanbul that it would only agree to end the war if kyiv abandoned large pieces of territory and accepts the limits of the size of its army. Ukraine has repeatedly rejected the Russian conditions as they are going.
