The number of children requiring hospitalization for complications due to serious malnutrition increases because WHO warns that the health system collapses ”.
More than 2,700 children under the age of five in Gaza have received a diagnosis of malnutritionMarking a sharp increase in the number of children with serious health since screening in February, the United Nations reports.
Of nearly 47,000 under the age of five projected for malnutrition in the second half of in May, 5.8% (or 2,733 children) suffered from acute malnutrition, “almost triple in the proportion of children diagnosed with malnutrition” three months earlier, the UN announced on Thursday.
The number of children with severe acute malnutrition requiring admission to the hospital also increased by around double in May compared to previous months, according to the report of the United Nations Humanitarian Affairs Coordination (OCHA).
According to data from the nutritional cluster quoted by the OCHA, more than 16,500 children under the age of five have been detected and treated for severe acute malnutrition in Gaza since January, including 141 children with complications requiring hospitalization.
Despite the increase in children suffering from serious malnutrition and requiring hospitalization, “there are currently only four stabilization centers for the treatment of [severe acute malnutrition] With medical complications in the Gaza Strip, ”says the ochha report.
“North Gaza and Rafah stabilization centers have been forced to suspend operations, leaving children in these areas without access to vital treatment,” he adds.
The latest UN warning on the health of young children in Gaza comes when the entire population of the Palestinian territory deals with famine, and the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the “Enclave Health System is collapsing”.
Offering a call for “urgent protection” of two of the last remaining hospitals in Gaza, the WHO said that the “Nasser medical complex, the most important reference hospital in Gaza and the Al-Aal hospital risked becoming non-functional”.
“The relentless and systematic decimation of hospitals in Gaza has been lasts too long. It must end immediately,” the WHO said in a statement.
“Who calls for urgent protection of the Nasser Medical Complex and the Al-Aal Hospital to ensure that they remain accessible, functional and out of attacks and hostilities,” he said.
“Patients who seek refuge and care to save their lives should not risk losing them by trying to reach hospitals.”
The United Nations experts, the medical officials of Gaza, as well as medical charities, have long accused Israeli forces of deliberately targeting health workers and medical establishments in Gaza in what has been described as a deliberate attempt to make the living conditions uninvable for the Palestinian population in the band.
