A Chinese national accused of illegally voting at the University of Michigan fled the United States, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation which was not sealed on Friday.
Haoxiang Gao attended the University based in Ann Arbor in October 2024 and lived on campus, the authorities announced.
Security officials with the school spoke to Gao on October 28 after hearing information according to which a student had illustrated a vote in the general elections of 2024, according to recently unclotted court documents. CBS Detroit previously reported On the case, but the authorities did not identify the GAO at the time.
The Gao admitted during the conversation with the school he had registered to vote and had voted in a place of survey on the campus on October 27. He was charged by the state on October 30 of an unauthorized electrical accusation attempt to vote and make a false affidavit in order to secure the registration of voters, according to the judicial archives.
During the indictment of Gao, a judge ordered him to return his Chinese passport and not to leave Michigan, according to the criminal complaint. The FBI said in the file that the GAO passport was in possession of school security officials at the court hearing.
CBS News Detroit contacted the university to comment.
The GAO was charged by the federal flight government to avoid prosecution, although the United States did not have an extradition treaty with China. According to the prosecutors, he went on a delta flight at Detroit International Airport in Shanghai, China, on January 19 using a Chinese passport on his behalf.
A mandate from Gao was also issued after missing the court hearings on March 6 and April 24.
