Will Knight: Perhaps we also need an open source renewed movement, so we don’t only use agents who belong and have data to these giant companies. Use the code and open source models, and that kind of thing.
Michael Heat: It’s a very good idea. We should get a signal on this subject. They should start doing this. They should make their own model.
Lauren Goode: I think it looks great.
Michael Heat: Ok, take another break, and we will come back right away. Will and Lauren, thank you for invigorating the conversation. We are going to put the AI agents on the side for a minute and put us human once again. Let’s talk about a few recommendations. Will, as a guest, please recommend something to our listeners.
Will Knight: Ok, I talked about it earlier, but I want to make it my recommendation. I’m going to hold it, which is a super radio. This book, which is The evolution of the agency by Michael Tomasello. I found it just fascinating and really revealing on what is lacking with AI in terms of agency and the importance of understanding human social interaction, human culture. Regarding the overview of intelligence in AG, everyone is talking about, but they don’t really talk about it.
Michael Heat: Good. Lauren, what is your recommendation?
Lauren Goode: My recommendation is local news, and in particular the local mission.
Michael Heat: Yeah!
Lauren Goode: Mission Local is a local non -profit press organization here in San Francisco which covers the mission district, but also in San Francisco. They do a fantastic job. Many things happen in American cities at the moment, especially Los Angeles, and also in San Francisco. There are raids on the ice in the country and people descend into the street to protest them. Mission Local has done an excellent job covering what is happening so far in San Francisco. I recommend that you support them and support your local news if you can. Mike, what is your recommendation?
Michael Heat: I want to recommend a trial in the current Harper’s issue. It is by the Norwegian writer Karl Ove Knausgaard who, Lauren, I am sure that you are tired of me. But it’s a fantastic essay. This is called “the reunited world”. Karl Ove counts with technology. He tells you about the first time he met a computer, which was 40 years ago. Then he just didn’t pay attention to computers and it starts to disturb him. There is an excellent quote near the summit. “Holding somewhat informed of the political situation in the world is a duty, something is not right to turn away. Shouldn’t something similar apply to technology, given the immensity of the influence of computer science?” I love this quote, because it really happens at the center of what we are talking about today. In order to get involved with the world, you need to understand how these systems work. He goes to a Greek island to visit the writer James Bridle because their book Ways of being is a very good introduction to intelligence and artificial intelligence and natural intelligence. They talk a lot about artificial intelligence and how it has developed and how different ways to calculate intelligence have come in our lives. It is a really wonderful piece reported on the current state of technology of our lives.
Lauren Goode: Great.
Michael Heat: Yeah.
Lauren Goode: It seems much shorter than his books.
Michael Heat: Yeah. You can read it in less than an hour.
Lauren Goode: Grom, it seems good to me.
