US bans WhatsApp from House of Representatives staff devices

The US government has prohibited WhatsApp from devices used by US House of Representatives, saying that the application has potential security risks, Reuters reportedquoting a memo sent to the staff of the room.

“The cybersecurity office considered WhatsApp a high risk for users due to the lack of transparency in the way it protects user data, the absence of encryption of stored data and potential security risks linked to its use,” said Reuters.

The memo recommends rather that staff use applications such as signal, Imessage, Facetime and Microsoft, depending on the report.

Meta in January said He had detected and disrupted a hacking campaign targeting approximately 90 WhatsApp users, including journalists. The hack was linked to Paragon Solutions, an Israeli spy software manufacturer who was acquired in December of last year by the American giant of investment capital Ae Partners Industriels.

And according to A research report in MayThe governments of Australia, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Israel and Singapore are probably customers of Paragon.

Meta did not immediately return a comment request.
