The United States has vetoed the UN Security Council resolution project calling for a “unconditional and permanent” ceasefire in Gaza.
The other 14 members voted in favor of the document, which also demanded the release of all hostages and the lifting of humanitarian aid restrictions.
The United States Ambassador to the UN, Dorothy Shea, said that the resolution “would undermine diplomatic efforts” to reach a cease-fire, adding that the UN did not qualify Hamas as a terrorist organization. Hamas is described as such by the United States, the United Kingdom and the EU.
“We do not support any measure which does not condemn Hamas and does not call that Hamas disarm itself and leaves Gaza,” she said.
This comes in the midst of the growing concern about the distribution of Aid to Gaza, with more than two million people at risk of famine, according to the UN, after a total Israeli ban on food shipments and other aid which lasted 11 weeks.
AID Distribution has recently been taken over by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an Israeli group supported by the United States which aims to replace the United Nations and other organizations in the region.

The UK ambassador to the UN Barbara Woodward explained that she had voted in favor of the draft resolution because Great Britain wants the “intolerable situation to Gaza must end” and that the country considers a cease-fire as the best way to “carry out a long-term political solution”.
She added that Israel must “put an end to her restrictions” on the aid now and “let the UN and the humanitarian workers do their work to save lives, reduce suffering and maintain dignity”.
Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, during which around 1,200 people were killed, and 251 others were taken hostage.
At least 54,000 people have been killed in Gaza since then, including 4,201 since Israel resumed its offensive on March 18, according to the Ministry of Health of the Territory.
