The world has welcomed the ceasefire agreed by Israel and Iran, but remains distrustful that peace remains fragile.

Israel and Iran would have agreed early Tuesday on the plan of the progressive ceasefire announced overnight by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, but the two parties threatened rapid reprisals in the event of the other, and the tension remains high.

American politicians are divided on Trump’s ceasefire efforts.

Egypt

Jordan

Jordan welcomed the ceasefire and stressed its importance in reducing tensions in the region.

Sufyan Qudah, spokesperson for the Jordan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stressed that the cease-fire agreement should be protected from new deterioration.

He also called for a ceasefire to now be reached in Gaza.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia said it “welcomes the announcement by (Trump) … that a formula for a cease-fire agreement was concluded between the two parties”.

Russia

“If a ceasefire has indeed been achieved, it can only be welcomed,” the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists, adding that Moscow hoped “that it will be a lasting cease-fire”.

China

China said that it did not want tensions between Israel and Iran to degenerate and were ready to work with the international community to maintain peace and stability in the Middle East.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told a regular press conference that Beijing called on all the parties concerned to return to a political settlement on an early date.

European Union

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the block “welcomed” the announcement. “This is an important step towards restoring stability in a region in tension.
