Tottenham Hotspur are looking to spend during the January transfer window, and the sale of Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace for £35million already underlines the focus on improving the final third.
There has been a marked lack of creativity and verve at Tottenham this season, with Thomas Franck He is yet to establish the framework that has ensured comparative riches with Brentford at Gtech, crashing out of the Championship in 2021 and working his way through four comfortable campaigns in the Danish system.
Spurs need a winger, of course, but there is still plenty to be desired at number nine too, with Dominic Solanke struggling for fitness all year and Richarlison coming and going in front of goal.
The ENIC Group has provided Frank with the funds to complete a number of signings this winter. They’ve made progress over the past few weeks from a defensive standpoint, but the Spurs’ offense just isn’t working.
Creativity is at an all-time low, of course, but there doesn’t seem to be much confidence in the goalscoring options at number nine, with Solanke, Richarlison and on-loan Randal Kolo Muani paling in comparison to Harry Kane – he is the club’s top scorer, but that doesn’t need to be mentioned.
Tottenham are in it for the long haul, and Porto Samu Aghehowa could be the ideal person to move Frank’s project forward. According to Caught offsidethe Spaniard remains on the Londoners’ list after expressing interest last year, although his employers are unwilling to sell mid-campaign.
Valued at £87 millionSamu has established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting and prolific attacking prospects over the past year and a half, and Chelsea and Manchester United are among the the other big clubs to have expressed their interest lately.
Samu scored a lot of goals for Porto last season, and journalist Zach Lowy noted that he had the potential to become “one of the best strikers in Europe“.
Raised in Spain, Samu joined Porto from Atletico Madrid in 2024 after nearly moving to Stamford Bridge and signing for Chelsea. This could have been a mistake; having remained in Iberian territory, he developed his qualities and became a complete attacker.
Could the 21-year-old become the next Kane, with that in mind?
Replacing the England skipper has been a difficult task for the Lilywhites, but Samu might just have what it takes to replace the world-class ace, who now leads an ambitious Bayern Munich project.

Kane is a superstar, and he was the poster boy for so many years on the N17. Solanke and others all have attributes worth writing about, but none come close to the depth and consistency of Kane, and that’s where Samu could step in.
Powerful, tall and tenacious, Samu looks cut out for Premier League football, especially now that he is riding the crest of a wave, nine goals in 14 Europa League matches for Porto and 28 in 44 in the Portuguese top flight.
This is much better than the efforts of Solanke, who has only played twice in the Premier League this season. His injury-plagued Spurs career is unhappy, but Frank and his colleagues must be ruthless in the future, lest the team continue to flatter to deceive.
He’s not just a flashy scorer. According to the FBref data platform, Samu ranks this year among the 16% of the best attackers in La Liga Portugal for shot-creating actions and the 5% for successful positions per 90.
A successful takeover is recorded when a player beats their opponent by carrying the ball directly in front of them while maintaining possession.
While last year he served as something of a target man, his physique, athleticism and drive have now been able to develop.
In this he shares something with Kane, who is one of the deadliest leaders of his generation but who is also remarkably unique, with the vision of a born number ten and the intelligence of an elite midfield general.
As we all know, it’s not easy to replace a center forward of Kane’s level, but Samu is the complete package and he has what it takes to become a Premier League superstar.
