Unless Terence Crawford changes your mind about retirement, Canelo Alvarez will forever be known as his last opponent in a boxing ring.
The two met at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in September, where Canelo was defending his undisputed super middleweight status in the fight.
Due to Crawford’s strengthening two weight divisions, Canelo was considered the favorite going into the fight, but it certainly didn’t turn out that way, while “Bud” delivered arguably the best performance of his entire career to earn a unanimous decision victory.
The victory took Crawford to undisputed honors in a third weight division, having already achieved this at super-lightweight and welterweight, while also holding the world title at lightweight and super-welterweight.
After this victory, attention turned to what “Bud” might do next, with suggestions of moving up to middleweight with the aim of becoming a six-weight world champion. while a rematch with Canelo has also been touted.
Instead, a surprise third option presented itself, when Crawford announced his abrupt retirement from the sport in December, hanging up his gloves with a perfect 42-0 record.
With Canelo set to be the last opponent Crawford will face, the Mexican superstar revealed during his post-fight press conference in September exactly what he thought of his rival’s abilities, declaring that his former rival “has everything.”
“All [gave me trouble]. He has everything.
We knew Crawford was a great fighter. I did what I was supposed to do, right? I tried everything possible. I trained very hard. He deserves all the credit. I did my best. I couldn’t understand the style.
Along with the victory against Canelo, Crawford also defeated Errol Spence Jr and Shawn Porter, and will go down as one of the greatest boxers in recent memory.
