That of Bryan Kohberger his younger sister says she warned her brother that a “psycho killer” was on the loose after the deaths of four University of Idaho students, without knowing she was speaking to the man later convicted of the brutal killings.
Mel Kohberger, Bryan’s sister, recalled the conversation with her brother during a recent interview with The New York Timessaying he felt a sense of concern after hearing about the murders in Moscow, Idaho. Kohberger pleaded guilty to the murder of Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Kaylee Goncalves, who were killed on November 13, 2022.
“Bryan, you run outside and this psychopathic killer is on the loose,” she remembers telling her brother. “Be careful.”
Bryan thanked her for checking in and assured Mel he would be safe. Mel said Bryan was the type of person who would go jogging late at night and leave his door open, prompting him to check in.

Mel recalled how Bryan was constantly bullied during adolescence. Friends had previously said he was overweight and had an aloof personality. In online posts when Bryan was a teenager, according to the outlet, he said he had no emotions, little remorse and felt like “a sack of organic meat with no self-esteem.”
Bryan, who was addicted to heroin When he was a teenager, he stole Mel’s phone and sold it at a mall so he could buy more drugs, the sister said. Mel said her family feared Bryan was about to die prematurely, which happened to one of his friends. However, Mel said Bryan received treatment and is doing better.
“We were all very proud of him because he had overcome so much,” Mel said.

After treatment, although Bryan remained socially awkward and abrasive at times, Mel never considered him a violent person, she said.
Bryan didn’t argue Idaho murders remaining at his parents’ home in Pennsylvania a few days before the FBI raid, but Mel remembers him mentioning the case once, noting that investigators were still looking for a suspect.
When Bryan was arrested On December 30, 2022, Mel remembers receiving a phone call from her older sister, Amanda.

“She told me, ‘I work for the FBI. Bryan was arrested,'” Mel said. “I said to myself, ‘For what?’”
“The Idaho murders,” Amanda replied.
Mel initially thought her sister might be playing a prank on her before becoming nauseous at the thought that her own brother was behind the murders of four students.
Overnight, Mel said her world was turned upside down. Bryan’s sister said she was training to start her new job as a mental health counselor at New Jersey but agreed to resign after the new employer was inundated with inquiries.

Mel said she became angry after seeing posts online from people speculating that her family may have known that Bryan killed the four University of Idaho students.
“I’ve always been a person who stood up for what was right,” Mel said. “If I ever had reason to believe my brother had done something, I would have reported him.”
