Morocco lined in the CAN quarter-finals after beating Tanzania with a tight 1-0. It took a second-half goal from Brahim Diaz to secure victory after a frustrating first half.

Morocco controlled possession for long periods but struggled to convert their dominance into clear chances before the break.

An early Ismael Saibari goal was ruled out following a VAR offside warning, setting the tone for a half in which the hosts struggled to break down a compact Tanzania defence.

Ayoub El Kaabi and Diaz both went close with headers and efforts inside the box, while Tanzania offered an occasional threat on the counter, notably through Simon Msuva, whose first-time header drifted wide.

Despite Morocco’s territorial advantage and several chances from set pieces, the teams were level at halftime.

Diaz brings the breakthrough

The breakthrough finally came just after the hour mark. Achraf Hakimi advanced from right back and slipped a pass to Diaz, who finished from a tight angle on the right to find the bottom corner and give Morocco the lead.

Tanzania responded with more urgency, forcing Yassine Bounou to make a save from Mohamed Husseini and win a series of free-kicks in the advanced areas.

However, Morocco managed the closing stages effectively, slowing the pace and making a series of substitutions to maintain their lead.

The final minutes were fragmented by fouls, saves and yellow cards as Tanzania attempted to equalize.

Morocco held on for seven minutes of added time, finishing the match to claim a hard-fought victory.
