Nigeria-Mozambique match preview

Group C winners Nigeria continue their quest for a fourth African Cup of Nations title when they face Mozambique at the Complexe Sportif de Fez on Monday.

The Super Eagles progressed to the group stage with a perfect record, while Mozambique booked their place in the round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams.

Eric Chelle’s side underlined their credentials as title contenders by winning their three group matches, scoring eight goals and conceding four in the process.

Their most recent victory, a 3-1 success against Uganda, came with a heavily rotated starting XI, highlighting the depth Chelle has at her disposal.

This squad depth has been a defining feature of the Nigerian tournament so far. With several regular starters expected to return on Monday, Mozambique will be tasked with containing one of the competition’s most potent attacking units.

There were, however, some concerns on the defensive side. Nigeria are yet to keep a clean sheet at the tournament, conceding in all three matches in the group stage, providing a glimmer of encouragement to their opponents.

Mozambique, for its part, is participating in the round of 16 of the African Cup of Nations for the first time in its history.

After securing their first victory in AFCON, the Mambas will be aiming for a major upset as they aim for only their second victory in the competition’s history and a place in the quarterfinals.

Team news for Nigeria vs Mozambique

Eric Chelle recognized the difficulty of selecting his starting XI given the depth and quality of his team.

Victor Osimhen is expected to return to the starting lineup despite an inconsistent tournament so far. The Galatasaray striker scored against Tunisia on matchday two but otherwise struggled to establish himself in the final third.

Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams are both expected to be reinstated after being rested against Uganda, while Samuel Chukwueze is also expected to play an advanced role.

Defensively, a familiar back four of Bruno Onyemaechi, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey and Bright Osayi-Samuel is likely to be restored.

Cyriel Dessers and Ryan Alebiosu will be absent due to injury, with the former having yet to participate in the tournament.

Mozambique are dealing with their own injury problems, as Diogo Calila and Nene are ruled out and will not be available for selection.

Mozambique

Nigeria’s attacking depth and overall quality should make the difference over 90 minutes, especially with key players returning to the starting XI.

Mozambique will likely approach the match cautiously and prioritize defensive organization, which could limit the number of clear-cut chances. However, the Super Eagles’ firepower should still be enough to ensure progress.https://x.com/CAF_Online/status/2003072763188387867
