What it was like in the courtroom during Maduro’s hearing

Nicolas Maduro, former president of Venezuela, appeared in a New York court for the first time after his capture by US forces in Caracas on January 3.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, appeared before a judge handcuffed and leg shackled. They must be tried on charges including narcoterrorism. Both have pleaded not guilty.

The BBC’s Madeline Halpert was inside the courtroom as the former president addressed the judge.
