The former United defender wants the club to return to its values.
Gary Neville called Manchester United to stop the “experiments” after Ruben Amorim was removed from office on Monday.
Amorim was sacked after 14 months at the helmhis last game at the helm in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds United. He oversaw most of the worst season in the club’s Premier League history after taking over from Erik ten Hag, finishing 15th while losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.
United have improved this season and sit sixth in the table. Premier League tablethree points outside the top four.
However, the Portuguese reportedly had a hostile meeting with director of football Jason Wilcox on Friday, with Amorim reportedly responding negatively to criticism over his approach during a 1-1 draw against bottom club Wolves.
Amorim then indicated that he would not receive the financial support needed to operate his much-criticised 3-4-3 system and, following the stalemate at Elland Road, he made clear his desire to work as United manager, not head coach. In addition, Amorim has clearly indicated his desire to leave at the end of his contract, in 18 months.
These were his final comments as United boss, with the club set to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season before finding a permanent replacement.
Former United right-back Neville believes the successor must be a manager who fits the club’s traditional ‘DNA’.
“Louis van Gaal had his own philosophy. Jose Mourinho plays a certain style of football. David Moyes as well. Erik ten Hag, again, a very different style of football – different to what Man United would usually play,” Neville told Sky Sports News.
“Ruben Amorim, a very different style of football to what Man United would usually expect.
“The experiments must stop.
“There is a very good video online where Bobby Charlton talks about what Man United is like as a football club. Adventurous and exciting football, playing with young players, entertaining the crowd. Man United need to take risks and be brave by playing attacking football.
“Man United need to appoint a manager who fits the DNA of their club. Ajax will never change for anyone, Barcelona will never change for anyone. I don’t think Man United should change for anyone.
“You can’t say these managers aren’t good coaches, but they all came in with different ideas, different styles of play, different philosophies and none of them really fit the Man United way.
“The club now needs to find a manager who has experience, who is ready to play fast, entertaining, attacking and aggressive football.”
Darren Fletcher will take charge of Wednesday’s trip to Burnley, with Neville uncertain about how United’s season will pan out under an interim boss, whether that person is Fletcher or is appointed from outside the club.
“Manchester United appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a short-term contract and it has gone very well,” Neville added. “It was a big boost for the club. They then appointed Ralf Rangnick on a short-term contract and it was an absolute disaster. So we experienced both things.”
