Egypt reserved their place in the African Cup of Nations quarter-finals after extra time with a 3-1 victory Benign.

It was a nervy end to the match, with the underdogs equalizing late, but two goals in the extra 30 minutes – including one from Mohamed Salah – were enough to seal the victory.

The first half was choppy and stop-start, with several fouls and injuries disrupting the pace.

Egypt saw early efforts from Salah and Omar Marmoush blocked, while Benin threatened sporadically on the break, notably through Aiyegun Tosin and Junior Olaitan.

But both teams went into the break scoreless after a physical opening 45 minutes that resulted in several yellow cards.

Egypt took control after the restart and opened the scoring in the 69th minute when Marwan Attia struck from outside the box, curling a right-footed shot into the top corner.

Benin responded well and were rewarded in the 83rd minute, when Jodel Dossou converted from close range after sustained pressure to level the match and force extra time.

The momentum shifted back to Egypt in the first overtime period. From a corner in the 97th minute, Yasser Ibrahim rose highest to score with a header and restore Egypt’s lead.

Benin advanced in search of another equalizer but struggled to create clear chances.

Any lingering doubts were removed right into stoppage time when Salah finished a quick break with a low left-footed strike from outside the box to make it 3-1. Egypt used the remaining seconds to claim a hard-fought overtime victory, much to the relief of everyone on the pitch and on the sidelines.
