A 15-year-old Texas high school student was fatally shot by another teen accused of brandishing a gun in a car following a New Year’s Day party, authorities said.
The shooting took place while Brynnlee Hampton He was returning home with seven others to Amarillo after midnight on Thursday, Jan. 1, according to court documents reviewed by KFDA-TV.
A passenger inside the car, Jeremiah Luke Lajuan Matthewsis accused of brandishing a gun and pointing it at others inside the vehicle, according to court documents, the television station reported. Then a gunshot went off, hitting Hampton, the driver of the car later told investigators, according to authorities.
Hampton was sitting in the front passenger seat when she was shot, according to the television station. She was taken to Northwest Texas Hospital and pronounced dead.
Hampton, a sophomore at Tascosa High School, “had a strong and kind spirit it touched everyone who knew her,” her obituary read.
“She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.”
Hampton is survived by his parents, two brothers, grandparents and great-grandparents, according to his obituary.
Matthews, 17, is now accused of manslaughter in connection with Hampton’s death, according to KVII-TV.
Information about his legal representation was not immediately available.
Following the shooting inside the car, the driver told investigators that when she tried to call her mother for help, Matthews tried to stop her, according to court documents reported by KVII-TV.
Another teenager, Landrey Korde Matthewswho was inside the car when Hampton was shot, according to court documents, is accused of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence with intent to harm an investigation into the shooting, KVII-TV reported.
Following the shooting, a complaint says Landrey, 17, grabbed Jeremiah’s gun and threw it in the street, according to the television station.
Information about Landrey’s legal representation was not immediately available.
A GoFundMe page set up by Hampton’s family to support his funeral arrangements states that Hampton “loved his family tenderly and, most importantly, she loved God.
“She would read her Bible, and when she found a verse that she really liked, she would write it down, take a picture of it and send it to her Mimi,” says the page. “She loved her brothers very much and loved spending time with her friends.”
“Our family is torn apart,” the page also says.
At Tascosa High School, Hampton played for the volleyball team and was in the National Honor Society, his obituary said.
“OUR hearts are broken” reads a Friday, January 2 Facebook post from Tascosa Rebel Volleyball. “Our volleyball family is mourning the tragic loss of one of our own.”
“Brynnlee was a light on and off the field,” the post continued.
Hampton’s funeral will be held in Amarillo on Tuesday, January 6, according to his obituary.
“Then she will be transported to Paducah, Texas, where she will be laid to rest next to her great-grandmother, whom she loved dearly,” her family’s GoFundMe page states.
Jeremiah and Landrey were held at the Potter County Detention Center, according to jail records.
Jeremiah’s bail was set at $500,000, while Landrey’s bail was set at $250,000, KFDA-TV reported.
